Healthgrades ranks the best hospitals nationwide for delivering superior patient experiences – The Journal of Healthcare Contracting

June 21, 2022 – Healthgrades, the leading website Americans use to find care, today announced the recipients of the Healthgrades 2022 Outstanding Patient Experience Award™. For this annual analysis, Healthgrades evaluated 3,173 hospitals*, and this year’s awards recognize 399 hospitals that represent the top 15% nationwide for prioritizing and excelling in providing a superior patient experience¹

Among this year’s Outstanding Patient Experience Award recipients are nine hospitals that improved patient experience in nine measures and 130 recipients that improved in five or more measures. Hays Medical Center in Kansas and Penn Highlands Elk in Pennsylvania stand out among this year’s honorees as they are the only hospitals to have seen patient experience gains in all 10 measures.

“It’s no surprise that the patient experience in our healthcare systems has suffered during the COVID-19 pandemic, so it’s extraordinary that nearly 400 hospitals have received top ratings for patient experience,” said Brad Bowman, MD, chief medical officer and head of Data Science , Health Grades. “We commend these hospitals for their continued commitment to keep the patient experience at the fore even during difficult times.”

Healthgrades assesses performance by applying a scoring methodology to ten measures of patient experience, using data derived from an HCAHPS survey of the hospital’s own patients. The survey questions focus on patients’ perceptions of their care in the hospital, with topics such as:

  1. overall rating
  1. Recommendation to family and friends
  1. communication with doctors
  1. communication with caregivers
  1. responsiveness of hospital staff
  1. communication about medicines
  1. cleanliness
  1. Noise level in patient rooms
  1. discharge information
  1. care transition

The metrics also include whether a patient would recommend the hospital to friends or relatives and how they rate the hospital overall.
